Meet Pip, the Headlinne Mascot
Pip is the small orange bird who turns up across Headlinne. Who he is, what each of his expressions means, and where you will actually run into him.

Who Pip is
Pip is a small orange bird in a Headlinne jumper, and he is the face of the product. He is drawn as pixel art β a deliberately low-resolution style borrowed from early video games, where every pixel is placed by hand rather than smoothed by software.
His job is narrow and specific: he shows up at the moments where a new reader is most likely to be confused or waiting, and he says one useful thing. He is not an assistant, he is not a chatbot, and he does not have opinions about the news. He is a guide.
What his expressions mean
Pip has a set of poses, and each one is used for a particular kind of moment rather than picked at random. Once you have seen them a few times, the pose itself tells you what kind of message is coming.
- Standing and breathing β the default. He is just present, usually alongside a short line of text.
- Walking β something is in progress. You will see this most often while a Deep Dive is being assembled.
- Talking β his beak opens and closes while a speech bubble is on screen.
- Pointing β he is drawing your attention to the thing next to him.
- Wings out β a greeting, or presenting something new.
- Reading a newspaper β a reading or research state.
- Puzzled, with a question mark β questions, empty states, and things that did not go as planned.
- Green tick β something finished successfully.
- Jumping β a celebration, such as hitting a swipe milestone.
Where you will see him
Pip appears on the Headlinne homepage, where he introduces what the product does in a few rotating lines; alongside the "Questions?" heading on the homepage FAQ, wearing the puzzled expression; and on the Dive Deeper loading screen, where he walks a research trail while the stages tick over.
That last one is the case where he earns his keep. Assembling a Deep Dive takes real time because it is genuinely searching, ranking and structuring sources. A spinner tells you nothing during that wait. Pip walking a marked trail, with the current stage written above him, tells you roughly how far along the work is and what it is doing.
What Pip is not
Pip never writes, rewrites, or summarises the news. Article summaries, the "Why This Matters" insight, and bias analysis are produced by the analysis pipeline and labelled as AI-generated where they appear. Pip is interface furniture β he explains the product, not the journalism.
He also never speaks in a story's voice. You will not see him characterising a news event as good, bad, funny, or alarming. Keeping a cartoon bird well away from editorial judgement is the whole point of the boundary.
Key takeaways
- βPip is Headlinne's pixel-art mascot: a small orange bird who guides rather than assists.
- βHis poses are a vocabulary β walking means work in progress, puzzled means questions, a tick means done.
- βHe appears on the homepage, the FAQ, and the Dive Deeper loading screen.
- βHe never writes, summarises, or comments on the news itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pip an AI assistant or a chatbot?
No. Pip cannot be talked to and does not answer questions. He is a mascot: an animated character who appears at specific points in the interface with a short, pre-written line. Headlinne's actual AI features are AI Search and Dive Deeper, and both are labelled as such.
Does Pip write the article summaries?
No. Summaries, "Why This Matters" insights, and bias analysis come from Headlinne's analysis pipeline and are marked as AI-generated. Pip only ever explains how the product works.
What kind of animal is Pip?
A small bird, in a rust-orange jumper with the Headlinne "h" on the front. The pixel-art style keeps him simple enough to read clearly at very small sizes.
Can I turn Pip off?
There is no separate setting for him, but he respects your system's reduced-motion preference. If you have that enabled, Pip stops animating and the purely decorative appearances are removed entirely.
