Trinamool Congress lawmaker Abhishek Banerjee alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party supporters attacked his residence in Kolkata early Saturday morning, marking what he described as the seventh attempt on his life this year.
The confrontation occurred around 2 a.m. outside the Diamond Harbour MP's home in the Kalighat area, following a late-night clash between workers from the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Mr. Banerjee claimed that the attackers threw stones and bricks at the property after conducting two days of reconnaissance, an allegation he linked to a broader breakdown of law and order.

The incident has heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress leadership has accused the state police and the judiciary of failing to intervene in ongoing intimidation against their members.
“After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today. Watch the footage and see for yourself,” said Mr. Banerjee in a post on X.
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the residence later to protest the incident, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of using gangs to disrupt festivities and intimidate political opponents.
“If you have the courage to use a bulldozer, why do you come here at 3:00 in the morning with a gang of thugs to attack a Kali Puja celebration?” said Mamata Banerjee.
The Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the allegations as a fabrication, with state minister Dilip Ghosh characterizing the event as a political performance intended to mislead the public.

“If anyone creates a nuisance at night, then protest is expected. Who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee?” said Mr. Ghosh.
Kolkata Police have moved to enforce Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in the area, a measure that had already been in place in the surrounding vicinity since October.
Mr. Banerjee stated that he intends to bring the matter of the alleged surveillance and the subsequent attack to the attention of the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
