United States First Lady Melania Trump secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the occupied city of Oleshky on Friday to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations.
The military pause is scheduled to begin on October 29, 2026, though Russian and Ukrainian military commands stated their forces would halt firing earlier on October 27.
The agreement aims to rescue remaining residents in the southern Ukrainian town, where hundreds of people have faced severe shortages of food, medicine and clean water since Russian forces seized the area in February 2022.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire,” said First Lady Melania Trump in a statement released by the White House.

“Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” she said.
“Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” she added.
The city originally had a population of around 24,000 residents before the war, but officials estimate that 1,700 to 6,000 people remain behind, including dozens of children.
Large portions of the municipality were heavily damaged during combat operations and severely flooded following the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam in 2023.
Non-military civilian leaders from both nations will visit residents in their homes to determine required assistance and coordinate safe passage.
General Valery Gerasimov announced that Russian forces would cease fire on the Kherson axis and ensure safe movement for the humanitarian convoy.
Ukrainian military command confirmed it would observe the ceasefire in the designated area to carry out the humanitarian operation.
The Independent reported that the announcement sparked online criticism and debate over whether the White House overlooked earlier diplomatic outreach by Pope Leo XIV to Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
It remains unresolved how long the ceasefire will ultimately remain in place and whether the broader logistical hurdles on the ground can be fully overcome.
