British prosecutors charged two men with national security offenses on Tuesday following an incident in September at a military airfield in England utilized by the United States.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the defendants are Mohmed Abdulkarim, a British-Iranian dual national, and Nouman Essghir, a British citizen, both aged 24 and living in London.

Abdulkarim faces a charge of conduct likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service, while Essghir is accused of entering a prohibited place prejudicial to the safety of the United Kingdom.

The case centers on RAF Fairford, located in Gloucestershire, which had hosted American long-range bombers executing strikes against Iran earlier this year.

The incident prompted the United States Air Force to withdraw its heavy bombers from the facility on security grounds shortly after the initial arrests.

British authorities linked the security breach to Tehran, with senior officials asserting the operation was directed by the Iranian state.

“We have seen a range of incidents in recent months that we believe have been directed by the Iranian state, and as the director general of MI5 said just the other week, we are working together to intervene, identify and respond to that threat,” said Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor.

Taylor, who leads national counter terrorism policing for the country, said police believe the foreign power Abdulkarim assisted was Iran.

Essghir was apprehended outside the airfield on September 27 as armed officers and military bomb disposal teams deployed to the rural area.

Police evacuated scores of nearby residents from their homes while conducting searches, later finding gasoline in vans at the scene but no explosives.

Investigators arrested Abdulkarim within the past week, while six other men remain free on police bail as the inquiry proceeds.

“We know that decisions made during our investigations can sometimes appear illogical to those on the outside, but I want to make it very clear, that there will always be good reason, or rationale behind them,” Taylor said.

Iranian officials denied involvement in the alleged plot, though Tehran previously maintained that military installations utilized to attack its territory are legitimate targets.

The two defendants are scheduled to make an appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court later on Tuesday.
