Two British men charged with helping Iran over Fairford airbase incident

Two British nationals have been charged under the National Security Act for allegedly assisting Iranian intelligence near the RAF Fairford airbase. The arrests follow an incident in September involving five men near the base, which is used by US bombers.
Why it matters
The case highlights growing concerns regarding foreign state-sponsored espionage and security threats against military infrastructure in the UK.
British prosecutors said on Tuesday they had charged two British nationals under the National Security Act over an incident last month at the RAF Fairford airbase, with police saying the two were suspected of assisting Iran. RAF Fairford had been used by US B-1 bombers to carry out strikes on Iran, but they were withdrawn on security grounds shortly after five men were arrested outside the military base in southwest England in the early hours of September 27. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Tuesday it had charged Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, with engaging in conduct that was likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service. Nouman Essghir, 24, was charged with one offense of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK on August 22. The pair, who both live in London, will appear at Westminster Magistrate’s Court later on Tuesday.
