The driver of the car that allegedly ploughed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters has been charged.

Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, 18, has been charged with three instances of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three instances of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and three instances of cause bodily harm by misconduct, according to court documents viewed by the ABC.

Samarasinghe's provisional licence had been suspended and the vehicle seized before a forensic examination, NSW police said in a statement.

He was to appear in Newcastle Bail Court on Sunday.

Samarasinghe was arrested at the scene after a car that police allege he was driving crashed into a crowd at a roundabout on Newcastle Link Road , at Wallsend in Newcastle's west, about 9:30am on Saturday.

Helicopters landed on a nearby oval to help transport patients to hospital.
