Boston Red Sox players expressed frustration following a disappointing and uncompetitive exit from the Wild Card series against the New York Yankees. Veterans criticized the team's performance after being outscored 18-2 across two games.
Why it matters
The loss highlights the volatility of postseason baseball and the internal pressure within high-profile professional sports organizations.
NEW YORK — While some in the Red Sox clubhouse were willing to take a big-picture look at the team’s season with some satisfaction over a historic midseason turnaround, there were others who spoke strongly about Boston’s fate after a short series loss to the Yankees that one veteran called “uncompetitive.”
Shortly after the Red Sox lost, 9-2, to New York in Game 2 of the best-of-three set , infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, one of the more outspoken veterans on the team, spoke plainly about what happened in a 48-hour span in which Boston was limited to seven hits and outscored 18-2.
“Obviously, not what any of us expected,” Kiner-Falefa said. “Uncompetitive two games. Got boat-raced. The better team won.”
