PM Modi and Tamil Nadu CM Vijay flag off Chennai Metro Rail’s first train for phase II project, take a ride together

Chennai Metro Rail’s new chapter began on Sunday (October 11, 2026) with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay flagging off the Phase II network from Porur Bypass Metro Rail station on Sunday (October 11, 2026) morning. Chennai Metro Rail’s 54 km network has now grown to 68 km with the opening of the Poonamallee- Vadapalani stretch of the phase II network.
After arriving at Porur Bypass station around 11.30 a.m., Mr. Modi and Mr. Vijay were initially briefed about the various aspects of the Chennai Metro Rail’s 118.9 km Phase II project, including the balanced cantilever project at Kathipara and the progress of the tunnelling work, among others. Then, after purchasing a ticket, Mr Modi walked through the station and reached the platform. Subsequently, both of them flagged off the first train and then boarded the next train for a ride from Porur Bypass to Poonamallee.
