Level 3 evacuation issued near Newport Bayfront due to fire

A fire at the Pacific Seafood facility in Newport, Oregon, prompted emergency evacuations due to concerns over potential ammonia contamination. Local authorities have since contained the fire and lifted most evacuation orders, though residents were advised to take precautions against smoke.
Why it matters
Industrial fires involving hazardous chemicals pose significant public health risks and require rapid emergency management coordination.
Multiple agencies are on scene of a large structure fire at the Pacific Seafood facility on Newport's historic Bayfront. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office issued level 2 and 3 evacuations within a mile of the facility, located at 203 SW Bay Boulevard. As of 9 p.m., crews have lifted evacuation levels in all areas, according to John Fuller, Public Information Officer for the city of Newport. Fuller told KATU the fire is still active this evening but is contained. He also said there is still smoke throughout areas of town, so officials are continuing to recommend wearing a mask if going outside. An evacuation shelter was first set up at Sam Case Elementary and was moved to Atonement Lutheran Church at 2315 N Coast Hwy as wind patterns changed. The evacuation point at Atonement Lutheran Church is now closed, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
