Evacuation orders were issued in Newport, Oregon, due to a fire at a facility containing anhydrous ammonia, though most orders have since been lifted. No civilian injuries were reported, and hazmat teams are monitoring the site to ensure safety.
Why it matters
Public safety incidents involving hazardous materials require immediate reporting to inform local residents and ensure emergency response transparency.
UPDATE : According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, evacuation orders have largely been lifted, though Level 3 Orders remain in affect for a few blocks around the initial area of the fire due to smoke concerns. Level 3 "Go Now" evacuations are in effect for the area bounded by SW Bay Boulevard between Fall Street and Hatfield Drive, Hatfield Drive to SW 10th Street, SW 10th Street to SW Canyon Way, SW Canyon Way to Fall Street, and Fall Street back to SW Bay Boulevard. The Linn-Benton State Hazmat Team 05 responded to the facility due to the presence of anhydrous ammonia, a chemical used in refrigeration. Crews are monitoring air quality and modeling potential areas of impact to assist with evacuations. The Oregon State Fire Marshal said the ammonia tank at the facility appears to be intact and is not believed to be leaking.
