Lawson qualifies in top 10 for Spanish GP as Norris takes pole

Kiwi Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson qualified eighth for the Spanish Grand Prix, while Lando Norris secured a surprise pole position. Norris outperformed Kimi Antonelli by a narrow margin to lead the grid at the new Madrid urban circuit.

<p>Kiwi F1 driver Liam Lawson qualified eighth for the Spanish Grand Prix, while Lando Norris came out of nowhere to secure a vital pole position. </p> <p>Lawson put in a strong performance early in today's qualifying sessions, but was unable to break past the top eight in Q3. He will line up behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri in tomorrow's race. </p> <p>"I think we were very competitive through the first part of quali, and unfortunately, it just fell away from us a little bit in Q3," Lawson said. </p> <p>"I think everybody else made quite a big step in Q3, and we just missed out. So it's a shame. I think we were very competitive today." </p> <p>He expected tomorrow's race to be "very, very tough". </p> <p>"I think overtaking is basically impossible. Tyres were quite difficult yesterday, so maybe that makes it more challenging."
