Lamar Jackson needs surgery, headed to injured reserve with thumb injury sustained in loss to Bills
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will undergo surgery for a thumb injury sustained in a game against the Buffalo Bills, placing him on injured reserve for at least four weeks. The team also lost backup quarterback Tyler Huntley to a toe injury, forcing undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano to finish the game.
Why it matters
Jackson's injury is a significant blow to the Ravens' season, potentially impacting their playoff chances, and highlights the fragility of NFL rosters, especially at the quarterback position.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson left Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills with a right thumb sustained on Baltimore's first offensive play.
He'll need surgery to repair the injury on his throwing hand and will require a stint on injured reserve that will sideline him for four weeks weeks at a minimum. Head coach Jesse Minter announced the update after Baltimore's 36-10 loss to the Bills .
The Ravens didn't announce the precise nature of Jackson's injury, and Minter didn't know yet if it will be season-ending.
Jackson took contact on his hand after his first pass of the game and was in immediate pain. He left the field and walked straight to the locker room. Huntley took his place at quarterback.
