Hagley Oval, Christchurch pitch report, T20I records and average scores ahead of New Zealand vs. India 1st T20I
India is set to face New Zealand in the first T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The match features a depleted New Zealand squad and an Indian team led by Shreyas Iyer, with both sides navigating local pitch conditions.
Why it matters
This match marks the start of a significant international cricket series between two major cricketing nations, drawing global sports interest.
India begin their tour of New Zealand on Thursday, October 22, with the first of five T20Is at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Shreyas Iyer captains the Indian side with Tilak Varma as his deputy.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner leads a depleted New Zealand team. Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes have both been ruled out through injury, and Josh Clarkson and Blair Tickner have come into the squad in their place.
India, meanwhile, have welcomed back Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Chakaravarthy to the T20I setup, and they also carry teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who earned his first call-up back in June.
The visitors arrive as T20 World Cup champions, having beaten this same opponent by 96 runs in the final in March, though they come to Hagley Oval without any experience of the ground, as India has never played a men's T20I here.
