India secured a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I match on Thursday at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, successfully chasing a target of 226 runs with two balls remaining.

Sanju Samson led the Indian batting effort with 67 runs off 33 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir contributed 42 runs each to complete the highest successful chase in Indian T20I history.

The win provides India with a critical advantage in the five-match series, as both teams prepare for the second contest scheduled at the same venue on Saturday.

The team management received praise for their selection strategy, which prioritized experienced openers despite public interest in younger players.

“Sanju is outstanding, he is a power-packed player,” said Sitanshu Kotak, the Indian batting coach, regarding the team's approach to the high-scoring chase.

India reached 94/1 during the powerplay, but New Zealand bowlers Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell slowed the scoring rate, leaving the visitors at 122/4 in the 11th over.

Dhir and Iyer stabilized the innings during the final overs, with Dhir hitting a six in the last over to seal the victory.

New Zealand set a record total of 225/4 on home soil, driven by Glenn Phillips, who finished unbeaten on 82 off 40 balls.

Following the match, the BCCI confirmed that Ishan Kishan sustained a low-grade right adductor strain and will miss the second T20I.

“If Ishan doesn’t play, unless he recovers completely, which the medical team will advise, Vaibhav could definitely step in for him,” said Kotak.

It remains to be seen whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make his series debut on Saturday to replace the injured Kishan.
