(Nairobi, Kenya) — The African Union Commission issued an urgent appeal for restraint and diplomatic engagement following a rapid succession of ambassadorial expulsions and diplomatic ruptures involving Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt.
The diplomatic friction escalated after federal authorities in Addis Ababa accused neighboring states of providing support to anti-government forces involved in renewed hostilities across northern Ethiopia .
In a major diplomatic action, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia declared Egyptian diplomatic staff member Ahmed Moharam Ahmed Soliman persona non grata, ordering him to depart the country within 48 hours in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In response, Egyptian authorities applied the principle of reciprocity, ordering a counselor at the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo to leave Egypt within a 48-hour deadline.
The expulsion of Egyptian diplomatic personnel coincided with the total collapse of formal diplomatic channels between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
