CJI Surya Kant to preside over 34th convocation of NLSIU on October 17

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is set to preside over the 34th convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) on October 17. The event follows a previous cancellation caused by student protests regarding the CJI's remarks on NEET exam leak demonstrations.
Why it matters
The event highlights ongoing tensions between the Indian judiciary and student bodies regarding judicial conduct and academic freedom.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will preside over the 34th annual convocation of National Law School University of India (NLSIU) on October 17, while actor and multilingual theatre artist Arundathi Nag will be the chief guest.
According to the NLSIU, the convocation will begin at 10.30 am at Jnana Jyothi auditorium, Palace Road.
Sources in the university said that the decision was approved by the university’s executive council and general council on September 9, which were chaired by CJI and chancellor of the University, Justice Surya Kant.
On August 27, the NLSIU administration had announced the cancellation of convocation, which was originally scheduled on September 12, due to “unavoidable circumstances” and students could collect the degrees in absentia after 700 students signed a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor opposing the participation of CJI Surya Kant and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra.
