Supreme Court Gets 3 Women Judges With Justice Sunita Agarwal's Elevation

The Indian Supreme Court has appointed Justice Sunita Agarwal, bringing the total number of sitting women judges to three. This follows a series of recent retirements and a sanctioned increase in the court's total judge capacity.
Why it matters
The composition of the Supreme Court is a significant indicator of judicial diversity and institutional capacity in the Indian legal system.
With the appointment of Justice Sunita Agarwal, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, the Supreme Court now has three sitting women judges. The highest number of women judges the Supreme Court had at a time was 4, when Justices Indira Banerjee, Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna and Bela Trivedi were present simultaneously from August 2021 till Justice Banerjee's retirement in September 2022. Justice Hima Kohli retired in September 2024 followed by Justice Bela M. Trivedi in May 2025.
