Christa Pike survives two lethal injection doses as Tennessee execution fails
Tennessee death row inmate Christa Gail Pike remains alive after a failed lethal injection execution attempt. The state has suspended future executions pending a third-party review of the incident.
Why it matters
The incident raises significant constitutional and ethical questions regarding the death penalty and the reliability of state execution protocols.
Tennessee death row inmate Christa Gail Pike remains alive and is receiving treatment at a hospital after authorities failed to carry out her execution following the administration of two doses of a lethal injection drug. Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, September 30, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. This would have been Tennessee's first execution of a woman in more than 200 years. According to court filings and accounts from media witnesses, prison officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during the execution attempt. However, Pike did not die. Witnesses reported that Pike remained alive and could be heard breathing and snoring after the second dose. Her lawyers subsequently filed emergency motions seeking to halt the execution, arguing that the failed procedure had subjected her to unconstitutional treatment.
