US woman taken to hospital after surviving two lethal injections on death row

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has suspended all executions following a botched lethal injection attempt where a death row inmate remained conscious after the procedure. An independent inquiry has been ordered to investigate the failure of the state's execution protocols.
Why it matters
This incident highlights ongoing ethical and procedural debates surrounding the death penalty and the reliability of state-sanctioned execution methods.
Tennessee’s governor has suspended all executions in the state until at least the end of the year and ordered an independent inquiry after a botched attempt to put a condemned inmate to death on Wednesday night.
Witnesses at the execution chamber in Nashville said Christa Pike, who was convicted of murder, was snoring loudly about 40 minutes after officials administered two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital.
The Tennessee department of correction said she was taken to an off-site medical facility. Her condition was unknown on Thursday.
Bill Lee, the state’s Republican governor, announced the suspension and inquiry in a statement early Thursday that appeared critical of prison authorities.
“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the state’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” he said.
