Australian MP has second leg amputated after attack

Australian independent MP Helen Haines has had both legs amputated following a deliberate car attack outside her electoral office in Wangaratta. The suspect, Brendan Nugent, has been charged with multiple offenses including dangerous driving causing serious injury, while anti-terrorism police investigate the incident.
Why it matters
The violent attack on a sitting elected official raises serious concerns regarding the safety of politicians and security around public figures in Australia.
Australian MP Helen Haines, who was deliberately hit by a car on Monday, has had both her legs amputated following the attack, her husband said.
Phil Haines said his wife had her left leg amputated on Monday and while there had been hope that her other leg could be saved, a second amputation was carried out today.
"But the good news in all this is Helen is alive and she's stable. That is the most important thing for our family.
"The two most important parts of Helen for us as a family are her heart and her mind. Her heart is huge. She is a very compassionate, caring, loving person."
Mr Haines added that he was "overwhelmed" by the support the family had received since the alleged attack.
