Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines lost both legs after a motorist struck her with a car outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday, according to her husband.

Doctors amputated her left leg shortly after the incident and her right leg on Wednesday at a Melbourne hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

The 65-year-old federal politician entered parliament in 2019, representing the rural Victorian seat of Indi and championing transparency, regional housing and climate action.

Speaking to reporters at the hospital on Wednesday, her husband Phil Haines provided an update on her medical status.

“The good news in all this is Helen is alive and she’s stable. That is the most important thing for our family,” he said.

Police arrested 43-year-old local resident Brendan Nugent at the scene after bystanders intervened to stop him following the collision.

Nugent appeared in the Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Wednesday to face charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury and causing harm to a public official.

Court documents also showed charges for cultivating and possessing cannabis, and the accused did not apply for bail during the brief hearing.

Defense lawyer Chirag Patel told the magistrate that his client suffered from a rare neurological condition called idiopathic transverse myelitis and a concussion.

Magistrate Allison Vaughan remanded Nugent in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on February 4.

Investigators have not established a motive for what police called a targeted attack, though anti-terrorism authorities are involved in the ongoing probe.

Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush said authorities are examining social media activity and potential anti-government views while considering further charges.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said officials held no prior intelligence indicating any imminent threat against the independent lawmaker.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over the safety of elected officials amid rising political polarization and online abuse across the country.

Authorities have until December 24 to serve the brief of evidence to the defense team.
