1Password for Agents lets personal AI agents log in without ever seeing the password
1Password has launched a new platform that allows AI agents to authenticate into user accounts without the agent ever accessing or storing the actual password. The system uses unique digital keys and user-approved prompts to maintain security.
Why it matters
As AI agents take on more autonomous tasks, this technology addresses critical security risks associated with sharing credentials with third-party software.
Identity security company 1Password today launched 1Password for Agents, its new sign-in platform for personal artificial intelligence agents.
Agents from Meta Platforms Inc., Anthropic PBC, OpenAI Group PBC and Elon Musk’s SpaceXSI will be able to log in to people’s accounts through it without ever seeing the password.
1Password for Agents is aimed at a habit that took hold once agents started paying bills and planning vacations for people. Most of those jobs mean getting into an account. The easy route has been to paste the password into the agent’s chat window, which leaves a copy saved somewhere outside the owner’s control.
Aashish Tripathi, chief product officer at 1Password, said agents are “starting to do real work on our behalf.” In his view, an agent asked to do one task has no reason to walk away with permanent access to the whole account.
