The United States government lifted tariffs on select Canadian agricultural and forestry imports on Friday, two weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, in a move that could aid vulnerable Republican candidates.

The White House announced that duties would be removed starting October 30 on items including plywood sheets, paper products, refrigeration equipment, and packing materials.

At the same time, the administration added new tariffs on other products such as carpets, certain valves, and waste products to balance the adjustments.

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine first announced the exemptions, stating that she had worked with the administration to secure relief for local producers.

“I am pleased to have secured additional tariff exemptions products crucial to Maine’s agricultural industries, including blueberry, potato, apple, and seaweed producers,” said Senator Susan Collins.

Collins faces a difficult re-election campaign in a border state where many businesses have struggled during the months-long trade dispute.

She said that many farmers “rely on specialized equipment, packaging materials, and other products from Canada that are either unavailable from American suppliers or cannot be replaced without incurring significant expense.”

Democrats are targeting the Senate seat in Maine as part of their broader effort to win control of Congress from Republicans.

Trade relations between the two nations deteriorated after negotiations broke down in August, leading the United States to impose 50% tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian goods.

The resulting trade friction has contributed to economic pressure in both countries, with Canada entering a technical recession this year following two quarters of economic contraction.

“The Canadian government takes note of these recent tariff measures adopted by the United States,” said Dominic LeBlanc, Ottawa’s Minister in charge of U.S.-Canada trade.

“While evaluating these recent measures, Canada remains ready to work together in a constructive and good-faith manner,” LeBlanc said.

Meanwhile, political opponents criticized the timing of the policy change and the broader impact of the trade conflict on local economies.

The White House did not immediately clarify whether broader trade negotiations with Canada would resume before the upcoming midterm elections.
