Walter Koenig, who played the navigator Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek television series, died Sunday at his home in North Hollywood at the age of 90.

His representative, talent agent Zachery McGinnis, confirmed the death on Monday, stating that the actor passed away from natural causes.

The death leaves William Shatner and George Takei as the final two surviving marquee cast members from the foundational 1960s science fiction show.

Koenig joined the cast during the second season in 1967 and went on to appear in seven feature films within the franchise.

Beyond Star Trek, he maintained a lengthy career that included a recurring role on the science fiction series Babylon 5.

"Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world," said McGinnis in a statement.

Takei shared a tribute to his longtime colleague on social media following the announcement of the death.

"Walter was more than Chekov," said George Takei, the actor who played Sulu. "He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend."

Born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1936, Koenig initially studied pre-med and psychology before pursuing acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.

He admitted in a later interview that he had never watched Star Trek prior to securing his role on the program.

While The Hollywood Reporter stated that Koenig died of natural causes, Nine.com.au reported that he passed away from old age at home surrounded by his daughter and niece.

Koenig continued working into his later years, recently winning best actor at the Independent Shorts Awards for his performance in Mr. Fleischmann.

Representatives noted that he remained active with fans through convention appearances and video game voice work.

Funeral arrangements and memorial plans remain unannounced by the family as tributes continue to arrive from admirers worldwide.
