The United States military formed a specialized task force on Saturday to disrupt Iranian overland and maritime trade routes used to move weapons and prohibited goods.
The 20-member unit, named Task Force Iron Gate, operates out of Tampa, Florida, with a staff of military and civilian personnel.
The group expands an ongoing American economic campaign during an eight-month war that has severely restricted commercial shipping and global energy supplies.
The United States initially imposed maritime restrictions early in the conflict after Iranian forces sought to limit vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
"Strengthening CENTCOM's collaboration with U.S. interagency partners will further constrain Iran's ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories, and replenish their military," said Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of Central Command.
Personnel from multiple federal agencies will coordinate to stop shipments of dual-use technologies, advanced weapons systems, and illicit revenue sources across land borders and the Caspian Sea.
American officials estimated that an existing maritime blockade has halted more than $25 billion worth of Iranian petroleum sales in recent months.
Central Command also assisted federal partners in freezing nearly $350 million in Iranian cryptocurrency assets, according to The Jerusalem Post.
"The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate reinforces the success of our ironclad blockade against Iran at sea," Cooper said.
Iranian officials rejected the move, asserting that American economic pressure measures would not succeed in causing a financial collapse.

"The United States will never be able to impose the economic blockade it is pursuing and proposing under various names and through different plans," said Hossein Mohebbi, a spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Mohebbi added that Washington remains unable to sever trade and transport connections between Tehran and neighboring countries, according to The Hindu.
The Times of India reported that Iranian military leaders claimed Tehran continues exporting air defense systems and munitions despite existing international restrictions.
International observers continue to monitor whether the expanded border restrictions will effectively halt Iranian trade as tensions remain high across the region.
