American technology shares tumbled across two days of trading as mounting financial expenditures on artificial intelligence prompted severe market sell-offs and declining stock values for major corporate firms.

The Nasdaq composite fell 2.9 percent on Friday, capping a difficult week for technology markets that included a record single-day plunge for Alphabet and a steep decline for Intel.

The market turbulence reflects broader anxiety among investors regarding whether massive capital outlays by major technology companies toward artificial intelligence infrastructure will yield sufficient financial returns.

"The reason why Alphabet is down is because their traditional revenue service of ad generation has been impacted by the very thing which is the AI boom, so it's causing a mix of results for Google," said Jamie Hannah, deputy head of investments at VanEck.

Alphabet shares dropped significantly after the company reported heavy spending on artificial intelligence initiatives and revealed that its own automated summaries were affecting traditional advertising revenue.

Intel experienced its worst single-day drop since the 1970s, with shares plunging nearly 30 percent after the chipmaker issued weak quarterly guidance and reported ongoing softness in the personal computer market.

David Zinsner, the finance chief at Intel, attributed part of the weak financial outlook to an industrial accident in Israel.

"We see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year," said David Zinsner, the chief financial officer at Intel.

According to CNBC, an explosion at a manufacturing facility in Israel killed two workers, injured another, and will reduce company revenue by roughly 600 million dollars across two quarters.

Amazon shares also declined after the retailer reported third-quarter results that missed expectations while maintaining a projected capital expenditure of 220 billion dollars for the year.

Other semiconductor and technology firms, including Nvidia, Broadcom, and Reddit, experienced notable share price drops amid the wider market correction.

"Investors have turned ruthless, punishing any signs of disappointment in third-quarter earnings," said Kathleen Brookes, research director at trading firm XTB.

Analysts and investors continue to debate whether the heavy financial commitments toward data centers and computing hardware will ultimately match corporate earnings.
