Paul Langmack, a three-time premiership winner with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and a former head coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, died on Thursday morning at the age of 61.

The former forward suffered a heart attack while at the Breakfast Point Country Club gym and could not be revived, according to reports citing the club.

Langmack played 314 first-grade matches during an illustrious career that included stints with the Bulldogs, Western Suburbs, and the Sydney Roosters, as well as two seasons with Halifax in England.

Beyond his playing achievements, Langmack was widely recognized for his post-career commitment to mental health advocacy and community initiatives through his work with the New South Wales Rugby League.

“I am devastated to learn of Paul’s sudden passing this morning,” said Phil Gould, the general manager of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Gould, who coached Langmack and remained a close friend, added, “He was a larger-than-life character. Paul was energetic, bubbly and enthusiastic. He loved his rugby league.”

Langmack was a key member of the Bulldogs’ success in the 1980s, securing premierships in 1984, 1985, and 1988, and he also represented New South Wales in four State of Origin matches.

Following his retirement from the field, he transitioned into coaching, leading the South Sydney Rabbitohs for 35 games across the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

“He had such a good heart,” said Greg Alexander, a Penrith legend who played alongside Langmack during the 1986 Kangaroos tour of Great Britain and France.

Alexander noted that Langmack’s dedication to helping others was a defining feature of his later years, as he worked to support both current and former players.

NRL executive chairman Peter V’landys praised Langmack’s impact on the sport, stating, “As a player, he was tough, but he had the skills as well. And he loved the game so much.”

Australian coach Kevin Walters confirmed that the national team will wear black armbands during their match against Samoa on Sunday night to honor Langmack’s legacy.

“His name in rugby league will be forever remembered and always respected and regarded,” said former teammate Benny Elias.

The rugby league community now awaits further details regarding funeral arrangements as tributes continue to pour in for the former player affectionately known as “Yesterday’s Hero.”
