Rory McIlroy received a two-stroke penalty during the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship on Thursday, significantly hindering his pursuit of an eighth Race to Dubai title.
The world number two carded a two-under 70 at Yas Links, leaving him eight shots behind leader Francesco Laporta, who opened with a bogey-free 62.
The penalty occurred at the par-four 12th hole, where officials determined that McIlroy improved his lie while assessing a chip shot from a sandy divot.
The incident is particularly significant as the tournament serves as the first of two playoff events that will determine the season-long winner of the Race to Dubai.

"There's obviously no intent - I play by the rules and I try and do everything I can to never end up in these positions," said Rory McIlroy.
He added, "But just by looking at the video, it doesn't look very good."
Replays showed a piece of grass moving near the ball as McIlroy placed his club behind it. The golfer explained he was attempting to determine if he could use a 54-degree wedge.
According to the DP World Tour, the rules prohibit a player from pressing their club into the ground. The organization stated that McIlroy accepted the penalty to avoid any perception of impropriety.
Playing partner Eugenio Chacarra defended the four-time major champion after the round, noting that he did not believe the lie was improved.
"I said that I don't think he improves his lie," said Eugenio Chacarra. "Obviously, the referee and him thought different."
Chacarra added, "In the video, it doesn't look great, but, I mean, we've been watching Rory for a long time, and he's a class man."
McIlroy will attempt to recover from the penalty during Friday's second round as he looks to close the gap on Laporta and the rest of the field.
