President Trump Criticizes LeBron James Over National Anthem Gestures

President Donald Trump accused professional basketball player LeBron James of disrespecting the United States after a video showed the athlete appearing to practice golf swings during the national anthem in New York on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at Madison Square Garden before the season-opening match between the Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks.

Footage broadcast from the game showed James moving his arms to simulate a golf swing while the Star-Spangled Banner played, while his teammates stood mostly still.

The confrontation brings renewed attention to the longstanding political friction between the president and the veteran basketball star, who have exchanged public criticisms for years.

President Trump condemned the actions in a post on social media.

"While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country!," said Donald Trump, the president.

President Trump added further criticism during a political rally in Iowa later in the week.

Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse addressed the controversy prior to the team taking the court, describing it as external noise.

"I think that goes right in with other outside noise we’ve already had," said Nick Nurse, the Philadelphia 76ers coach.

The reports differ on whether James was practising a golf swing or basketball shots, with the BBC noting both actions while other outlets focused primarily on the golf motion.
