Porirua Deputy Mayor Kylie Wihapi Dies Suddenly After Fall at Home

Porirua Deputy Mayor Kylie Wihapi died unexpectedly on Saturday morning after suffering a fatal fall at her home, plunging the city council into mourning.

The 45-year-old politician passed away following a freak accident at her residence, according to Porirua Mayor Anita Baker.

Baker said that Wihapi’s husband contacted her by phone on Saturday morning to report the accident.

The sudden death marks the second time in less than a year that the Porirua City Council has faced the loss of a serving member, following the death of Councillor Mike Duncan in June.

Civic leaders across the Wellington region expressed deep sorrow and disbelief over the passing of Wihapi, who joined the council in 2016 as its first elected Māori ward councillor.

Mayor Baker released a statement paying tribute to her late deputy.

“I am numb with shock and disbelief at the sudden loss of Deputy Mayor, Kylie Wihapi,” Baker said.

Baker added that Wihapi was a vibrant person who brought immense energy to her civic duties.

“She was such a vibrant, outgoing and generous person, full of life, warmth and a deep love for all of Porirua,” Baker said.

Colleagues and regional politicians praised Wihapi for her extensive community involvement, which included refereeing netball, supporting local fundraisers, and organizing charitable food drives.

Labour MP Barbara Edmonds described Wihapi as an energetic local leader who made time for everyone in the city.

Wellington Deputy Mayor Ben McNulty also shared online tributes mourning the loss of the warm and welcoming official.

Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer offered condolences to the family on behalf of the party.

Mayor Baker stated that further details regarding Wihapi’s contributions and memorial arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
