Police in Northern Ireland opened an investigation on Thursday after a suspended teacher confronted a senior clergyman outside a cathedral in Armagh.

Enoch Burke shared digital footage showing himself approaching John McDowell, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh, in the grounds of St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral.

The confrontation unfolded following a funeral service for a local rector, according to church officials.

The incident brings renewed attention to a years-long dispute stemming from Burke’s refusal to obey court orders regarding a transgender student at Wilson’s Hospital School.

During the recorded encounter, Burke challenged the archbishop about his imprisonment.

“I have languished in a prison cell for upholding the Church of Ireland ethos and for refusing to forsake scriptural truth. What do you have to say about it?” said Enoch Burke.

The archbishop responded directly to the physical contact during the exchange.

“If you keep assaulting me, I’m going to go the police,” said Archbishop John McDowell.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that inquiries are currently active regarding an alleged assault on a member of the clergy.

Church representatives condemned the timing and location of the dispute.

“It is a matter of deep concern and sadness that the Burke family considered this was an appropriate occasion to confront the archbishop in a particularly hostile and aggressive manner,” said a Church of Ireland spokesperson.

The legal troubles for Burke deepened separately on Thursday as courts addressed his ongoing refusal to stay away from his former workplace.

Judge Brian Cregan ordered Burke to pay 30,000 euros in additional penalties, pushing his total outstanding court fines past 238,000 euros.

Investigators have not indicated when their current inquiries into the cathedral incident will conclude, and no arrests have been announced.
