OpenAI announced on Monday that search queries on ChatGPT reached 20 percent of Google search volume, marking significant growth for the artificial intelligence company in the digital search market.
Adam Fry, the consumer product lead for ChatGPT at OpenAI, shared the figures during a press event, defining a search as any query resulting in a web search rather than basic definitions.
The milestone demonstrates how artificial intelligence tools continue to challenge traditional search engines, even as companies debate the future design of digital interfaces.
"That's where the future of this technology goes. You're talking to a canvas," said Adam Fry, the consumer product lead for ChatGPT.
Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai rejected the vision of interface-free computing proposed by OpenAI President Greg Brockman, arguing that screens remain essential for media consumption.
Pichai defended physical displays during an interview on a podcast, stating that users will still want to watch videos or create visual content using artificial intelligence systems.
"Computing historically has been humans adapting to computing. With AI, it'll be the other way around," said Sundar Pichai, the chief executive officer of Google.
In software updates, OpenAI emailed users regarding plans to merge the chat and work tabs within the ChatGPT desktop application to simplify project navigation.
The company stated that the update will draw tokens from a shared allowance pool for both ChatGPT and Codex, though it should not impact most users.
Meanwhile, users on Hacker News reported that data sharing settings for model training in Codex were silently reenabled without their knowledge.
OpenAI also defended the introduction of ads within ChatGPT, with Fry noting that sponsored products have not negatively affected overall product usage.
"Ads have not negatively impacted the product or the usage of the product," said Adam Fry, the consumer product lead for ChatGPT.
Competitor Anthropic previously combined chat and workspace functions into a single screen for its Claude system in September.
OpenAI plans to test the merged tab experience with select users before rolling out the changes to a wider audience.
