The Netherlands announced on Tuesday that it will not participate in next year's Eurovision Song Contest, citing ongoing sensitivities regarding Israel's inclusion in the global music competition.
The public broadcaster NPO reversed a decision made just last month to return to the contest, following an earlier boycott by the Dutch network AVROTros over the military campaign in Gaza.
The reversal deepens turmoil for the long-running television event, which faced five country boycotts and a sharp drop in viewership during the 2026 contest.
“We have known for some time that Israel’s participation elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division,” said Jurre Bosman, NPO's media director.
Mr. Bosman said the NPO decided to forgo participation in 2027 after consulting with the Board of Broadcasters.

Jet de Ranitz, NPO's executive chairman, acknowledged that many Dutch fans would feel disappointed by the sudden reversal.
“Due to the sensitivities surrounding the themes currently at play, we have decided to take a step back for the time being,” said Mr. De Ranitz.
Despite the withdrawal from the competition, public channels in the Netherlands will still air the live broadcast of the event next year.
Other nations are also stepping away from the upcoming contest, with Ireland confirming it will sit out for a second consecutive year.
The head of the Spanish public broadcaster has also expressed support for a boycott, according to reporting by the BBC and The Hindu.
Meanwhile, the Czech public broadcaster withdrew from the 2027 contest as well, though officials attributed that decision to budget cuts rather than political disputes.
Eurovision organizers recently introduced rule changes, including barring any nation involved in an armed conflict from hosting the event.
“We do not dismiss any of those views,” said Martin Green, the Eurovision Song Contest director, responding to the growing divisions.
Mr. Green added that organizers still believe the contest matters in a divided world by bringing people together around music.
The next edition of Eurovision is scheduled to take place on May 15 in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Burgas.
Bulgaria secured hosting rights after singer Darina Yotova won the 2026 competition in Vienna with her track Bangaranga.
