A 17-year-old boy driving a luxury car without a licence struck and killed a 55-year-old scooter rider in Kochi early Sunday, sparking local protests and a police review of the charges.
The crash occurred at around 2.20 am on Container Road in Cheranalloor when a Mercedes-Benz registered in the name of a judicial officer rammed into the back of the victim's vehicle.
The victim, identified as Jayabalakrishnan, operated a roadside eatery and was returning home at the time of the collision.
The incident comes less than two weeks after another fatal midnight collision in the city involving a speeding Mini Cooper that killed three youths on a scooter.
Police initially registered a case for rash driving and causing death by negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, allowing the teenager to be released on station bail.

Authorities later altered the charges to include Section 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, according to police reports.
Preliminary medical examinations indicated that the teenager had not consumed alcohol before the crash, and blood samples were collected for further analysis.
According to police, the driver claimed he was travelling from Vallarpadam towards Kalamassery when heavy rain and sudden swerving by the scooter to avoid waterlogging caused the collision.
Family members of the victim disputed the account and voiced anger over the initial handling of the case by law enforcement.
“We will move forward with the case, especially in view of the judge’s attitude. Also, it should be a lesson to everyone not to drive a vehicle without a licence,” said Jayalakshmi, the victim's niece.
Jayalakshmi also described the severity of the impact at the scene.

“One of his footwear items was on the road, while the other chappal and helmet were some distance away on the service road. The damage to the vehicles itself showed the intensity of the collision,” she said.
Local politicians and youth leaders have intervened to demand a transparent investigation into the vehicle owner's liability and the decision to grant station bail.
“There shouldn’t be any compromise in the probe on account of the family background and influence of the accused,” said Ernakulam MLA T.J. Vinod.
Police stated that the minor would be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board while investigations involving CCTV footage and witness statements continue.
