Marc Marquez won the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang on Sunday to extend his world championship lead to 44 points over his injured rival Jorge Martin.

The Ducati rider crossed the finish line in 40 minutes and 14.236 seconds, finishing 4.172 seconds ahead of Pedro Acosta, while his younger brother Alex Marquez placed third.

The victory marks the first time Marquez has won in Malaysia since 2018, bringing his points total to 399 with just a few rounds remaining in the season.

The Spaniard can now seal his eighth world title at the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix if he manages to extend his advantage to 74 points.

Jorge Martin attempted to ride in morning practice sessions but ultimately withdrew due to a wrist fracture suffered during a crash at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Marquez brothers battled for the lead early in the race before the older sibling pulled away from the pack in scorching conditions.

Acosta pursued the siblings closely from third place and eventually overtook Alex Marquez on lap 10 to secure the runner-up position.

"We did a perfect race, so I'm super, super happy," said Marc Marquez, the seven-time world champion.

"But my mentality still cannot change," said Marquez. "I have to keep focus, keep pushing."

"There are not many races to go, but there are many moments left," said Marquez. "So, we must be super confident."

Alex Marquez finished almost six seconds behind the race winner, while Marco Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura rounded out the top five positions.

Earlier in the weekend, Acosta claimed a victory in the rain-affected Saturday sprint race ahead of Marc Marquez and Bezzecchi.

Martin missed both the sprint and the main grand prix, leaving Aprilia to rely on Bezzecchi and his other teammates during the weekend.

Teams will now travel to Qatar for the next round, where the championship battle could reach its conclusion with two events left on the calendar.
