Kenya announced its second Ebola death on Friday as health officials confirmed a sixty-five-year-old woman succumbed to the virus while under quarantine in Nairobi.

The patient was a close family member and direct contact of the country's first victim, a man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo and died on October five.

Seven other Ebola patients are receiving treatment at two isolation facilities within the capital, according to the Ministry of Health.

Authorities have traced 135 contacts since the outbreak began, placing them in quarantine while monitoring for symptoms.

The current epidemic poses significant public health challenges across eastern, central and western Africa, prompting neighbouring nations to enforce strict screening measures.

“Her passing is a painful reminder that Ebola is a serious disease that can be fatal, and patients can change their condition suddenly without warning,” said Patrick Amoth, director-general for health in the ministry.

Medical personnel provided supportive care at an infectious disease unit after the woman developed symptoms ten days prior to her death.

Officials stated that all confirmed cases remain within a single cluster, with no current evidence of community spread.

Trained teams will arrange a safe burial in consultation with relatives to prevent any further transmission.

Meanwhile, Nigerian health authorities reported that the country's single confirmed case appears genetically related to the strain identified in Kenya.

“We are conducting additional tests. Some of the results are negative, while others are pending,” said Muhammad Pate, the Nigerian health minister.

Swiss officials confirmed that the Nigerian patient, married to a diplomat, did not visit Congo and likely contracted the virus during travel through Uganda.

Health authorities plan to release contacts who complete the twenty-one-day quarantine period without developing symptoms.
