An Australian endurance athlete returned to competition by winning an indoor fitness event in Hamburg on Friday months after facing severe public criticism for continuing a race in Beijing while suffering from diarrhoea.

Joanna Wietrzyk completed the course in 56 minutes and 10.21 seconds to secure victory in the women's event.

The 24-year-old placed ahead of American competitors Lauren Weeks, who finished in 56 minutes and 24.37 seconds, and Vivian Tafuto, who recorded 57 minutes and 55.34 seconds.

Organisers faced sharp criticism in September after Wietrzyk finished the Beijing race and used shared gym equipment despite visible contamination on her body.

Footage of the incident spread widely online, leading to calls for competitor refunds and an official apology from company leaders.

Moritz Fürste, the co-founder of the fitness racing organisation, said that officials made an error by failing to intervene during the competition.

New regulations now grant race directors the authority to pull athletes from competition if bodily fluids present contamination risks to others.

Wietrzyk subsequently forfeited her victory in China and later addressed the public regarding her actions during an interview.

Speaking to the BBC, Wietrzyk said, "It was my decision to continue racing so I take full responsibility for that."

She also stated in the interview, "I didn't really think about those around me… the decision that I made in hindsight was the wrong decision and I'm truly sorry for everyone that I did affect."

Wietrzyk described the online reaction as a difficult ordeal.

She noted in an online post prior to the Hamburg event that she spent weeks reflecting on the controversy.

Organisers have warned that individuals sending threats or abusive messages to the athlete face bans from future competitions.

The international tour features upcoming stops in cities including London, Bangkok, Las Vegas and Lyon.
