Heavy rain and poor visibility forced officials to cancel the final Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island on Sunday, ending a 3-decade run at the circuit.
The decision came after multiple delays pushed the start time back from two in the afternoon to four-thirty. Organisers ultimately called off the premier class event twenty-five minutes before pit lane was due to open.
Earlier support events, including the Moto2 and Moto3 races as well as the Australian Superbikes race three, were also scrapped as conditions deteriorated across the Bass Coast venue.
The cancellation prevented the medical helicopter from operating safely, a regulatory requirement given the distance from the nearest hospital.

Race director Graham Webb said: "The helicopter needs a window of around 60 minutes in both places - Phillip Island and Melbourne - in order for us to start the race."
Webb added: "Just based on safety, we need to make sure that, if we do have any issues, we're covered, we can get a rider quickly to hospital."
The washout prevents Ducati rider Marc Marquez from extending his championship lead. Marquez leaves Australia holding a 10-point advantage over his nearest rival after taking pole position during Saturday qualifying.
The cancellation served as a reprieve for Aprilia rider Jorge Martin. Martin sat out Sunday after sustaining a non-displaced fracture of the distal radius in a crash during the Saturday sprint.
Aprilia stated that Martin will not require surgery in Spain and plans to attempt a return at the next round in Malaysia. Marco Bezzecchi remains third in the standings, 50 points behind the leader.
The grand prix will relocate to a new street circuit in Adelaide starting next year after negotiations to keep the event at Phillip Island failed.
Local business owners voiced concern over the loss of the fixture. Kim Storey, chief executive of Destination Phillip Island, said there was absolute devastation when the news broke.
Storey said: "It's not just the economic impact to the region, it's actually the platform to promote regional Victoria and Phillip Island and Bass Coast, and our businesses really depend on that October influx and support to our economy."
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation announced that ticketholders would receive refunds following the abandonment. Riders instead completed parade laps behind the safety car to greet fans.
Competitors will now travel to Sepang for the Malaysian Grand Prix as the championship season enters its final four rounds.
