A former military pilot in Australia went on trial Monday accused of murdering his wife and staging the scene to look like a ride-on lawnmower accident to protect his assets.

Robert John Crawford, 49, pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court in Brisbane to the domestic violence murder of Frances Elizabeth Crawford.

The prosecution alleged the accused strangled his wife or struck her head at their Upper Lockyer property on July 29, 2024.

Crown Prosecutor Chris Cook told the jury that the accused lived a double life and wanted to avoid losing millions of dollars in a looming divorce settlement.

The trial centers on whether the death was an accident or a planned homicide meant to preserve the husband's superannuation and real estate holdings.

Jurors were shown graphic photographs of the victim found lying in her pyjamas near a tipped lawnmower at the bottom of a stone retaining wall.

Cook described the defendant as a master manipulator who engaged in numerous affairs and maintained an outward appearance of strong Christian values.

“He made out to be a man with good Christian values,” said Cook. “However, his story did not match his behaviour. He was a man who lived a double life for a long time.”

The court heard the victim had set strict boundaries for reconciliation, and faced a looming polygraph test and potential eviction from the home.

Defence barrister Saul Holt KC urged the jury to remain sceptical of the circumstantial case presented by the Crown during the opening arguments.

“The question for you is not whether Robert Crawford was always a good husband; he was not,” said Holt. “The question is whether any of that turns a lawn mower at the bottom of a rock wall into a murder, when it was not.”

The trial is expected to run for about three weeks and hear testimony from nearly 50 witnesses, including forensic experts, friends, and former partners.

Jurors are scheduled to visit the rural property on Wednesday to view the site where the body was discovered.
