Five people died and another sustained injuries during a shooting at a hotel in Guwahati on Monday evening following a disagreement over a lease agreement.

The gunman opened fire on six individuals at Hotel Bilas Inn, located on GS Road, around 9 p.m. before fleeing the scene.

Police arrested the leaseholder, Ghanakanta Gogoi, within an hour in the Paltan Bazar area and seized a licensed .32-bore pistol.

Authorities identified the dead as hotel owner Helena Bharali, her son Devarshi Kashyap, his wife Rinika Kashyap, relative Narayan Das, and her brother Bhudev Bharali.

The lone survivor, Satyendra Pathak, suffered a bullet wound in his shoulder and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The attack stems from tensions over a five-year lease signed in September 2025 involving a monthly rent of approximately Rs 1.8 lakh.

Disagreements regarding property use and facility provisions led to a scheduled meeting to resolve issues before an argument escalated into gunfire.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said, "Preliminary investigation and we suspect the incident stemmed from a dispute between the hotel owners and Gogoi over a lease agreement."

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Superintendent Devajit Choudhury said of the survivor, "He is in a stable condition. He will require further tests and will have to remain in the hospital for a few more days."

Assam police formed a special investigative team led by Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain to examine forensic evidence and witness statements.

Officers recovered several spent cartridge cases and live rounds of .32 calibre from the reception area and the approach road.

Investigators continue to review CCTV footage and gather further evidence to determine the precise circumstances that led to the mass shooting.
