The United States Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday in a 10-2 vote, keeping its target range between 3.75 and 4.00 percent while awaiting more economic data to combat persistent inflation.
The decision by the 12-member Federal Open Market Committee came just six days before the November 3 midterm elections, following an initial rate hike in September that marked the first increase in three years.
Consumer inflation reached 3.7 percent in September, remaining well above the central bank's long-term target of 2 percent as households grapple with rising energy costs and broader price increases.
“The accumulation of more information will help the Committee determine the policy stance appropriate to ensure a timely return of inflation to the Committee’s two percent goal,” the central bank said in a statement.

Two committee members dissented from the majority decision. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Beth Hammack voted instead for an immediate 0.25-percentage-point rate increase.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh spoke to reporters after the meeting, noting that economic activity was expanding at a strong pace while the central bank evaluates the effects of its monetary policy.
“The overwhelming consensus, the overwhelming judgement, is that what we've done in this monetary medicine is starting to work some,” said Kevin Warsh, the Federal Reserve chair.
Economists offered varying perspectives on the pause. Dan North, a senior economist at Allianz Trade, noted that consumer prices continued to climb faster than desired over the past year.
“It's 'wrong way,” said Dan North, a senior economist at the insurance company Allianz Trade. “That inflation line is going up, not down.”
Other analysts suggested the pause made sense given the time required for past rate hikes to affect the broader economy and labor market conditions.
Despite the decision to leave rates unchanged, financial markets and analysts widely expect policymakers to resume raising borrowing costs at their next scheduled meeting in December.
The central bank will review additional reports on employment, consumer spending, and price growth before the policy committee reconvenes on December 8.
