Film director Michael Mann suffered a minor leg injury on Saturday when a firearm accidentally discharged while holstered during target practice at a Los Angeles gun range.

Emergency responders transported the 83-year-old filmmaker to a local hospital following the incident, which occurred at approximately 4 p.m. at The Range LA.

Mann, an experienced target shooter for decades, was treated for a minor wound and released shortly after receiving medical care.

"On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann," said a spokesperson for the director.

The representative added that Mann was treated at a hospital for an injury that was subcutaneous and minor.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to reports of shots fired at the venue before investigating the scene.

"Responding units’ investigation determined the shooting to be accidental," said a police spokesperson.

Mann was attempting to holster his firearm during target practice when the weapon fired into his leg, according to reporting by TMZ.

Police confirmed that the victim had no intention of harming himself and that the discharge occurred during a training accident.

Initial reports of the shooting were published by TMZ, while The Guardian reported that the Associated Press also confirmed Mann had been taken to the hospital.

Mann is known for directing crime films including Thief, Manhunter, and Collateral, as well as helping create the 1980s television show Miami Vice.

He received an Academy Award nomination for best director for his work on The Insider and a nomination as a producer for The Aviator.

His most recent feature film, Ferrari, was released in 2023, and he is preparing to direct a sequel to his crime drama Heat based on a novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner.

The planned sequel is set to star Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Stephen Graham, who is set to play a younger version of a character from the original film.

"I’m really looking forward to it," said Graham regarding the project during an interview on Heart Breakfast.

"Fear and excitement live in the same place so there is a little bit of fear which is healthy," Graham said.

Production on the Heat sequel is expected to begin early next year, according to Yahoo, while Mann continues his recovery at home.
