An aggressive Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases on Tuesday, spreading rapidly across several African nations and claiming thousands of lives since May.
Government data from Congo put the total number of confirmed infections at 10,060, with deaths reaching nearly 5,000 across multiple provinces.
The epidemic is now the fastest-growing in history, outstripping the early speed of the 2014 to 2016 West African outbreak while compounding severe economic and humanitarian strains.
“It's a milestone that we're all surprised to be passing this quickly,” said Katie Thomas-Canfield, interim Ebola response director for the International Rescue Committee.

“10,000 people affected by Ebola in such a short period is really staggering,” she said.
The current emergency is driven by the rare Bundibugyo species of the virus, for which no fully approved vaccine or specific drug is currently available.
Beyond Congo, Kenya has reported nine cases, including two deaths following the illness of an index patient who traveled through Uganda.
Nigeria has confirmed one case involving a patient who received treatment in Abuja, while health authorities trace dozens of contacts.
Experts say prolonged armed conflict, difficult terrain, and community mistrust have severely hampered early containment efforts in eastern Congo.

“Some people still don’t seem to understand the seriousness of the situation, even though they are directly exposed to the risk,” said Sephora Bgosi, a member of the Ebola burial team in Ituri province.
“Ebola disease is extremely dangerous and can be deadly,” Ms. Bgosi said.
About 80 percent of recorded cases originate outside monitored contacts, indicating that chains of transmission remain hidden from public health responders.
African health ministers are scheduled to convene online to agree on a coordinated response and address persistent funding shortages.
