Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday, placing the 20-year-old rookie within two points of securing his first Formula One world championship.

Antonelli finished 16 seconds ahead of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, while Red Bull driver Max Verstappen placed third at the Circuit of the Americas.

The victory leaves Antonelli 123 points clear of his teammate George Russell in the drivers' standings with five races remaining in the season.

"It was the result we needed," Antonelli said after converting a one-stop strategy on medium tires into his ninth victory of the year.

Antonelli can claim the world title at the Mexico City Grand Prix next weekend by finishing ninth or higher, regardless of where his rivals finish.

Starting from pole position, Antonelli made a clean start to hold his lead into the first turn while Leclerc and Verstappen battled behind him.

Leclerc briefly overtook Verstappen for second place on the opening lap before the four-time champion reclaimed the position later in the lap.

Unlike Red Bull and Ferrari, who chose a two-stop strategy starting on soft tires, Mercedes committed Antonelli to a single pit stop.

The Italian driver built a two-second lead by the fifth lap and steadily increased his advantage over the field during his opening stint.

Verstappen made his first pit stop on lap 13, attempting an undercut that briefly brought him closer to the Mercedes driver.

Leclerc stopped two laps later than Verstappen and eventually closed the gap to second place during his second stint on medium tires.

Russell finished eighth after receiving a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during an early lap.

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton finished fourth, keeping alive slim mathematical chances for both himself and Russell to challenge for the title.

"I know we are very close. We try to finish on a high and hopefully we can clinch it very soon," Antonelli said.

Formula One heads to Mexico next week, where Antonelli needs only two points to become the sport's youngest world champion.
