Design platform Canva released its first homegrown image generation model on Wednesday, offering users advanced customization tools and competing directly with leading technology companies.
The new model, named Canva Craft, operates through a two-stage architecture that plans the spatial layout before producing images at up to 2K resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios.
Preliminary benchmark results placed the new technology fourth on Design Arena’s image-generation leaderboard, positioning the company behind OpenAI as the second-highest-ranked artificial intelligence laboratory.

The release marks a significant milestone for the Australian company as it expands its foundational technology offerings to rival major systems developed by Google, Microsoft, Meta, and ByteDance.
“This is a huge moment for us, and hopefully it shows that you don’t need to be in Silicon Valley to build world-class AI,” said Cliff Obrecht, the co-founder and chief operating officer of Canva.
“We’ve brought together amazing researchers and engineers from around the world, and they’re showing that even a relatively small lab can build AI that’s right up there with the best,” Obrecht said.
Rather than relying on raw photographs for training, the company utilized human-designed templates from its internal library to help the software generate legible text and precise object placement.
The training approach allows generated assets to convert easily into layered designs using existing platform tools, giving users the ability to edit specific elements without altering the rest of the image.
Capital Brief reported that the company brought forward the official announcement after preliminary testing showed strong performance in blind comparisons against competitor systems.
TechCrunch reported that researchers who joined following the 2024 acquisition of Leonardo.ai contributed significantly to the development of the new image generator.
The software is currently available globally to all users through the platform menu, and the company plans to introduce more efficient variants named Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast in the future.
