London law enforcement officers detained 325 people on Saturday outside the United States Embassy during a demonstration organized to support the banned activist organization Palestine Action, according to police officials.
The Metropolitan Police stated that 320 of those individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of expressing backing for a proscribed group under the Terrorism Act.
The demonstration took place in the Nine Elms area, where participants carried signs with phrases including “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.”
The action occurred as the organization challenges its terrorist designation through the legal system, with a Supreme Court review scheduled to examine the government ban.
Activists argue that the government prohibition infringes upon basic freedom of speech and criminalizes peaceful expression.
An organization known as Defend Our Juries stated that the weekend detentions pushed the cumulative number of arrests past 4,000 since the group was outlawed in July of last year.
“It is truly dystopian that there have now been over 4,000 arrests under terror laws for peaceful vigils silently expressing opposition to genocide and support for the protest group Palestine Action,” said Defend Our Juries in a statement.
Officers remained stationed at the embassy location into the evening hours as protesters chanted slogans and law enforcement transferred individuals toward waiting transport vans.
Some demonstrators had to be physically carried away by police after they refused to walk during the arrests.
Government figures show that thousands of detentions related to the organization had already been recorded prior to the weekend demonstration.
The Home Office indicated that officials intend to defend the proscription during the upcoming judicial proceedings.
Police reported that inquiries remain active regarding the demonstration, while further actions by authorities will depend on ongoing reviews of evidence.
