British adventurer Karl Bushby returned to his home in Hull on Monday, completing a 28-year, 31,000-mile odyssey that took him across four continents and 30 countries on foot.

Bushby, 57, began his journey in Punta Arenas, Chile, on November 1, 1998, at age 29. He arrived at his mother’s residence after walking through the final streets of his hometown.

The expedition required Bushby to navigate dense jungles, frozen tundra and massive bodies of water while strictly avoiding any form of motorized transport to advance his progress.

“I didn’t do this alone. There was a big team. The biggest team. Earth,” said Bushby during a public reception held in the city center before his final walk home.

His trek faced numerous delays, including visa complications, the 2007 global economic crash and the Covid pandemic. He also encountered physical dangers, such as a polar bear in Siberia.

Bushby was jailed for 18 days in Panama after crossing a restricted border zone and faced further detention in Russia for illegal entry, according to NBC News.

To maintain his self-imposed rules, he swam across the Caspian Sea and the English Channel. He previously crossed the Bering Strait on foot in 2006, according to BBC News.

“They say it takes a village, but literally it took a world to get me here,” Bushby said. He credited the kindness of strangers for helping him complete the mission.

The adventurer reunited with his mother, Angela, outside her home, marking their first meeting in a decade. He also met his 12-year-old granddaughter for the first time on Sunday.

Bushby expressed uncertainty about his immediate future, noting that he must now adjust to a static life after spending half of his existence as a traveling adventurer.

“Everything that I am and everything that I know of me is going to go away,” Bushby said. “And that’s going to be a problem.”

He now faces the task of reintegrating into normal life, admitting that he feels like a stranger in his own country after being away for more than 10,000 days.
