The condition of independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines improved from critical to serious but stable on Saturday after she suffered severe injuries in an alleged vehicle attack outside her office.

The 65-year-old politician was struck by a vehicle in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon and subsequently lost both of her legs.

Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, faces multiple charges after police alleged he deliberately drove his vehicle into the member of parliament.

The incident has reverberated through Australian politics and prompted renewed discussions concerning the safety of public figures.

The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne confirmed the change in her health status in an update released on Saturday morning.

"The patient is in a serious but stable condition at The Alfred on Saturday morning," said a spokesperson for the hospital.

Surgeons attempted to save her right leg following the crash, but both limbs were ultimately amputated due to the severity of the trauma.

Her husband, Phil Haines, provided an earlier statement regarding her resilience.

"Her heart is huge — she is a very compassionate, caring, loving person, incredibly supportive of all around her," said Phil Haines on Wednesday.

"And her mind — she has the sharpest intellect."

Nugent appeared in court on Wednesday without applying for bail and faces charges including intentionally causing serious injury.

Police stated that the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges could be filed as authorities examine potential factors.

Community members have left floral tributes and lit candles outside the electorate office in Wangaratta.

Supporters have also donated more than $1 million to Save the Children Australia in honor of the injured politician.

Staff members indicated that local electorate offices are scheduled to reopen next Thursday.
