Australia will give senior batter Steve Smith until the match begins to prove his fitness ahead of the deciding third Test against South Africa starting on Tuesday in Cape Town.
The three-match series is level at 1-1 following the opening two games.
The touring side faces crucial decisions regarding its batting order and player availability after releasing opening batter Nic Maddinson and back-up wicketkeeper Sam Harper from the squad.
Maddinson returned to the Test team after a 10-year absence but recorded scores of 0, 48, 0 and 8 during the tour.
Chief selector George Bailey addressed the decision to send Maddinson home after his two-Test experiment.
"Performance-wise, would you have liked more runs? Yes," Bailey said.
"Did it allow us to set the rest of the team up the way that we wanted to, whilst we're working with the group we have? Yes," Bailey said.
Smith dealt with a neck issue that affected him during the second Test in Gqeberha and limited his training in the nets to 20 minutes of gentle throwdowns.
Coach Andrew McDonald noted the team remains hopeful the experienced batsman will recover in time for the fixture.
"He hasn't had the start he would like in this series," McDonald said.
"He's got a bit of a neck issue going at the moment. You guys would have seen that play out in the nets," McDonald said.
Captain Pat Cummins expressed confidence in Smith's presence and leadership within the touring group.
"Hopefully, it all goes well and he'll be there," Cummins said.
Australia must also evaluate the position of Marnus Labuschagne at number three after he registered scores of 37, 37, 14 and 39 in the series without scoring a century since 2023.
The return of Cameron Green and Josh Inglis from injuries provides additional options for the team selection.
South Africa enters the deciding match without fast bowler Anrich Nortje due to a groin injury sustained in the second Test.
The team will announce its final playing eleven at the toss on Tuesday.
