The Asian Football Confederation postponed the 2027 Asian Cup on Tuesday, moving the tournament from early next year to December 2027 due to regional security instability and significant logistical challenges.
The competition, originally set for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now be held from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, according to the Kuala Lumpur-based governing body.
The decision follows a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including a strike on Riyadh’s international airport last month that resulted in 12 deaths and over 300 injuries.
The rescheduling reflects growing pressure from international football associations concerned about the safety of players and spectators as the regional conflict continues to impact major sporting events.
“The organising committee for AFC Asian Cup approved to reschedule the flagship national team tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region,” the confederation said.

Yasser al-Misehal, chairman of the local organising committee, said that Saudi Arabia remained prepared to host the event despite the shift in the calendar.
“The tournament will move to the new dates, and our preparations will continue as planned,” said al-Misehal.
The Saudi Pro League announced on Tuesday that it would postpone Matchweek 13 to allow for a review of the domestic fixture schedule following the change in the continental tournament dates.
While the league stated the move was intended to achieve a balanced distribution of fixtures, the change occurs as clubs face increasing difficulty with international travel and player availability.
Al-Nassr, the club featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, has experienced several disruptions, including the postponement of a home match against the United Arab Emirates side Al-Wasl after the visitors declined to travel.
Al-Nassr head coach Ange Postecoglou previously attributed the absence of star players from certain away matches to the physical demands of the schedule rather than security concerns.
“We've rested Cristiano, Kingsley Coman and Mohamed Simakan given the pressure of matches and the amount of travel involved,” said Postecoglou.
Other athletes have expressed personal concerns regarding the security situation, with the wife of Al-Hilal player Ollie Watkins stating she had returned to the United Kingdom with their children.
“There's just a little bit of conflict and things going on over in Saudi and we basically decided just to stay here,” said Ellie Watkins.
The Asian Football Confederation must now present the revised tournament dates to FIFA for final approval as the region faces ongoing uncertainty regarding the viability of future sporting fixtures.
